Is Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) Worth It?

Chronically ill patients in the US account for 76% of all physician visits.  Studies have shown that remote patient monitoring improves patient self-management and leads to earlier interventions. It can also reduce emergency hospital visits by 30%.

What Kind of RPM Services Does CMS Cover?

With the technology improvements, Medicare has increasingly endorsed the use of patient monitoring services. In 2015, it first added Chronic Care Management (CCM) codes to reimburse clinicians for using remote patient monitoring technology to manage chronically ill patients with 2+ chronic conditions. In 2020, it added new codes to expand coverage of remote patient monitoring (RPM) services for a wider range of patients. Most recently, in November 2022, it added reimbursement codes for Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM), allowing physicians to be reimbursed for the collection of non-physiological data such as for medication adherence and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
